Hi All!

I've been trying to convert a mesh created with FLUENT Meshing to OpenFOAM. I exported this mesh in ASCII as msh.gz and then extracted it with gunzip before deleting the brackets [] from the file as described in this post: Fluent mesh to OF conversion. I then tried to convert it with both fluentMeshToFoam and fluent3DMeshToFoam. fluentMeshToFoam didn't run and threw the following error:

Code:
--> FOAM FATAL ERROR:
unrecognised 3-D cell shape: 7

    From function int main(int, char**)
    in file fluentMeshToFoam.L at line 1120.

#1  Foam::error::abort() addr2line failed
#2  ?
#3  __libc_start_main addr2line failed

fluent3dMeshToFoam ran successfully but this resulted in the following warning: "--> FOAM Warning : Found unknown block of type: "11"
on line 17".

When running checkMesh, I received the following warning:
Code:
Checking topology...
    Boundary definition OK.
    Cell to face addressing OK.
 ***Unused points found in the mesh, number unused by faces: 9375 number unused by cells: 9375
  <<Writing 9375 unused points to set unusedPoints
    Upper triangular ordering OK.
    Face vertices OK.
    Number of regions: 1 (OK).
When opening the mesh with paraview, several elements are missing, see the attached picture.

I've tried different meshes including poly, hexcore and tet meshes, but I always get these warnings, which then results in missing mesh elements.

Has anyone come across something similar and has an easy solution to this?

Thanks for helping,

Julie

Hi Julie,

I'm currently trying to use the poly-hex core mesh using Fluent meshing and I'm facing the same problems.

Did you manage to find a solution in your case?

In the case of unused points, I used the Merge node feature in Fluent to delete all the unused nodes. This didn't fully solve the problem since OpenFoam still found unused points in my mesh but it did greatly reduce the number of unused points.
Best regards,

Amirmohammad

Hi Amirmohammad,

Sorry for the late response, didn't see your message. Saddly haven't found a fix for this yet. I'll have a go at using merge node and see if that helps in my case.

Thanks!

Julie
