In the new openfoam 5 wallGradU has been superseded by the postProcess utility:
postProcess -func 'grad(U)'

but is technically the same?

wallGradU was not calculating the grad(U) normal to the surface?

wallGradU.boundaryField()[patchi] =
-U.boundaryField()[patchi].snGrad();

How can i use the new postProcess -func 'grad(U)' to get information normal to the surface?

someone can explain how to use postProcess -func 'grad(U)' and get results at the wall normal surface?
I am just obtaining a tensor instead a vector for the wall. I would like to recover results as wallGradU.

They removed the functionality, Maybe the wallShearStress post-process functionalitty will be useful for you.
I was using wallGradU in order to modify it for mass flux at the wall. Finally, I modified wallHeatFlux in order to obtain what i wanted.
