Question Magnitude of Strain rate tensor

Hi there,

Is there anyone know the correct formula for magnitude of strain rate tensor. Currently I'm using (sqrt(2)*mag(symm(fvc::grad(U))) but some said above equation is for second invariant of the strain rate tensor. The question is, should I stick with the equation above or there is another formula to determine magnitude of strain rate tensor.
