Dear Foamers,

Please let me know your ideas.
My question is "How can I achieve heat transfer calculation between metal and water with boiling of water?"
Detailed information is below.Thank you in advance.

Currently, I started heat transfer calculation by using chtMultiRegionFoam.
Characteristics of calculation are:

1. There are solid region(metal) and fluid region(water) in the system.
2. Water surrounds spherical metal(Please take a look attached).
3. Metal has steady power(W).
4. I want to know temperature distribution of both metal and water.

After several weeks struggling (because I'm a new OF user), I could run calculations with chtMultiRegionFoam. And the results seem good.
But, I realized that temperature of water exceed boiling point when power of metal is high.
So, I want to include boiling of water in my heat transfer calculation.

According to previous threads, maybe I need to couple chtMultiRegionFoam and multiphase solver(reactingMultiphaseEulerFoam or something).
Is this true? Or is there another way? If you have knowledge about this problem, please show me next step.

I'm using OpenFOAM6.0.

Best regards,
Kodai

Hi, as far as I know chtMultiRegionFoam cannot deal with boiling. The temperature will just increase. But what you have to do to including boiling, I don't know.

I seems that what you are looking for is a combination between interPhaseChangeFoam (which seem to be made only for cavitation) + energy equation and chtMultiRegionFoam.

This topic was already discussed in the forum (see Conjugate Heat Transfer in Two-Phase Flow).

After a quick look in the internet I found the following master thesis which is about the treatment of condensation and evaporation in openfoam: https://www.researchgate.net/profile...-Phenomena.pdf

So it seems that you are not the first one attempting to solve this problem but no official solver is available yet.

Hi, thank you for your reply, mitti and mAlletto

Actually, I found the thread (Conjugate Heat Transfer in Two-Phase Flow) too. But I wondered that it is applicable in to my case. Thank you for your suggestion.

I will read the master thesis (https://www.researchgate.net/publica...tion_Phenomena)
too.

Actually there is a solver in the openfoam.com version which considers the evaporation and condensation of two fluid:

Sounds nice! So what I should do is combining interCondensatingEvaporatingFoam with fluid part in chtMultiregionfoam.

Thank you!

Hello, dear Foamers.I'm a novice who learns about OF. Now I'm setting up a case similar to yours. Could you please send me your case for a look? Your case will certainly be of great help to me

The latest release of ESI/OpenCFD OpenFOAM includes a chtMultiRegionTwoPhaseEulerFoam solver, which comes with a tutorial similar to the discussed problem: hot metal boiling water.

See the release notes of OpenFOAM v1906

I know this is a very old post. Is it possible to elaborate on how you achieved this as I am trying to achieve something very similar? Maybe a combination for interFoam with chtMultiregionfoam is helpful for me. Could you share this with me? Thanks!
