Hi there!
I have just started with OpenFoam (and CFD in general) and am currently trying to kickstart my project with what I thought would be a simple modelling of a control volume simulating the freestream at 11,000m and Mach 0.85 for use with a mesh further on with a wing and nacelle in the control volume. However, having worked with icoFoam, I believe that due to the high reynolds numbers this is probably not going to work. A university colleague recommended that I uses a solver that uses a k-epsilon model of turbulence to keep my simulations from taking forever on my home computer (this is part of a distance learning course), Can anyone recommend a solver that would fit the job for me please? Boundary conditions: p = 22.6kPa ro = 0.42kgm^-3 U = 234.22ms^-1 nu = 4.05x10^-5 |

Are you supposed to take compressible effects into account? Then rhoPimpleFoam or sonicFoam, but I think you can expect difficulties to achieve convergence.
Suitable incompressible solver is simpleFoam, there is even an airfoil2d tutorial case with this solver in the OF package. |

Thanks Simt. I will probably start with the incompressible solver just due to lack of time and memory ( I have an i7 3570K and 16GB of RAM but not an industry standard computer). My brief is to model the flow around two similar products ( I am modelling the flow around a wing with under, over and in wing configurations of engine nacelle) so if I have the time I will look into simulating with compressibility.
Will the values of k and epsilon used for the 2D simulation in simpleFoam be sufficient for a full 3D simulation? |
