Hey everybody,

I just started using openFOAM and am working my way through the tutorial. So far I encountered a few problems which I eventually was able to fix myself with a little search here and there.

However during step 2.1.5.3 of the tutorial I am now stuck.

I created a new folder cavityFine in the workingDir using as in 2.1.5.1 of the tuturial:

mkdir cavityFine
cp -r cavity/constant cavityFine
cp -r cavity/system cavityFine
cd cavityFine

Then I edited the blockMeshDict file as described in step 2.1.5.2 of the tutorial, subsequently ran blockMesh (this works).

However during step 2.1.5.3 when I execute the command:

mapFields ../cavity -consistent

The utility should run with output to the terminal including:
Quote:
Source: ”..” ”cavity”
Target: ”.” ”cavityFine”

Create databases as time

Source time: 0.5
Target time: 0.5

Create meshes

Source mesh size: 400 Target mesh size: 1600

Consistently creating and mapping fields for time 0.5

interpolating p
interpolating U

End
This is supposed to be the result as stated in the tutorial however I get the following outcome:
Quote:
Source: ”..” ”cavity”
Target: ”.” ”cavityFine”

Create databases as time

--> FOAM FATAL IO ERROR:
cannot find file

file: ./cavity/system/controlDict at line 0.
From function regI0object::readStream()
in file db/regI0object/regI0objectRead.C at line 237.
FOAM exiting
I am not sure how to proceed and would appreciate any help advise that you could provide to tackle this problem.

Regards,

Hi Roy,

Problem is explained obviously in the error text, just read it.
Check if the controlDict is exist at cavity/system.

Regards,
Arsalan.

Hey arsalan,

Thanks for the advice, I checked the folder cavity/system and there is definately a "controlDict" file present there. See image below.

Any other suggestions? Maybe I am missing something very simple.

Are you sure you are in the right directory?
It should read:
Source: ”..” ”cavity”
Target: ”<path>” ”cavityFine”
but in the attached picture it says:
source "." "cavity"
Target: ”<path>” ”cavityFine”

Note the single and double dots on the first line. You should be in cavityFine when running the mapFields utility. Also both cases should be in the same directory for .. to be able to address the cavity case
