Hello every one.

I have a question regarding OpenFOAM. Previously I used StarCCM for my modeling, but now I have to use opensource software and as a result OpenFOAM is my only choice. Most of my simulations will be based on wind around structures/buildings.

For modelling, I will be able to use google sketch up and I am planning to use gmsh for my meshing and then convert the mesh to use in openfoam. I am not sure my idea is good or bad.

Another thing I need to use Linux based operating system (not sure which one will it be?).

Can anyone help me with this. Is it a good idea to use gmsh to do the meshing and then take it to openfoam and run. I heard after meshing I can use snappyhexmesh to do wind around building simulations.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi,
as a new user myself back in time I had no problem in setting up OpenFOAM in both Ubuntu and Debian. I think the choice of the distribution is a matter of tastes.

For geometry creation and manipulation I often use Salome and Blender and then meshing is done with SnappyHexMesh. This is the work-flow I adopt even when dealing with wind around structure but there might be other efficient (or even better) ways, involving sketch-up, gmsh and/or others.

Thank you very much Teosim. Actually, I have been suggested to use google sketch up. That is why I was thinking of using sketch up. However, I heard in sketch up's new version snappy hex mesh can be done right a way. However, I am not sure about it.
