Mesh deformation due to Ice accretion.

Default Mesh deformation due to Ice accretion.

I am a PhD student involved in aircraft icing research. The procedure of the calculation (Let us think we wish to know the ice accretion around airfoil):
Step 1. NSF equation are solved(fluid: air).
Step 2. Shallow water droplet equations are solved considering fluid as continuum of droplets.
Step 3: Shallow water type ice equations are solved to find the ice accretion.


Now suppose we wish to see ice accretion for 30 minutes of exposure to icing condition, generally we divide our calculation (lets say 6) so each calculation shall for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes we will have some ice accretion on the airfoil. Then we need grid deformation around the airfoil and then repeat the procedures. I am attaching the image of the process and a sample grid deformation.


I wish to know the grid deformation after solidification, how it is possible to do in OpenFoam?

Hi Bidesh,

There are mesh deformation libraries in OpenFOAM but from my experience they don't work well with boundary layer grids. Foam-extend has better mesh deformation methods (RBF) for boundary layer grids. I am in the process of converting the RBF based mesh deformation from foam-extend to the latest OpenFOAM. From your figure it seems that you have quite bumpy geometry so remeshing could be an option as well.
