Default Reading binary VTK files from Octave/Matlab/Python

Hi, I am trying to extract position of 50 points from an unstructured grid type binary VTK file. I tried using Python, but could not get it to work. Can it be read directly by Ocatave/Matlab? Or, can you please guide me to using Python appropriately to extract position of the points?
