Hi all,

I have my openfoam installed in the server and i want to do the post processing in the local computers Paraview.

Unfortunately the server does not have any graphics card. Therefore, I am looking forward to the post processing through my computer.

What are the possibilities? Can anyone please help me. I am not able to understand fully the pvdataserver, pvrenderserver or using mpi pvserver?

Looking forward to the suggestions. Thank you!

This is something that I had to learn when I started working from home due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Here is a brief summary of how this works.
  1. Make sure that the versions of ParaView on your local computer and that on the server are identical.
  2. You need to launch pvserver on the server where the data is located.
  3. Then you start ParaView on your local computer, and connect to the pvserver running on the server.
  4. Once connected, you can use the ParaView on your local computer to post-process the data.
  5. If you save any data that will be saved on the server.
  6. If you save images of plots or similar those will be saved to your local computer.

I don't think you need to have graphics on the server. Once set up, the process is smooth and quick, almost like processing data on the local computer.

Please see chapter 14 (sections 14.1, and 14.2) of the ParaView manual for guidelines. The exact steps will depend on your server and connection, but hopefully it won't be difficult.

In case your server does not support rendering, e.g. due to missing graphics drivers or other problems: You can also use the two command line programms pvdataserver (on the server where the data lives) and pvrenderserver on your local computer. The latter is located in the same folder as paraview.

Then you have to select "Client / Data Server / Render Server" in paraview and give the names of the two servers (e.g. the server and localhost).
