Hi everyone,

I am an undergraduate student studying CFD.

As I am not much familiar with the field and the program Pointwise,

I have no idea about how to manage the problem that I recently encountered.

I am trying to generate a mesh with a 5-bladed propeller.

It has two domains (inner and outer) as I want to use sliding mesh method.

Therefore, there are 3 groups of surface meshes,

one is outer domain surface, (unstructural)
another is interface between the domains, (unstructural)
last is propeller blades. (structural)

I succeeded on generating empty block of inner domain and filled outer domain block, however, I can't initialize inner domain mesh with error messages "points are too close or coincident" and "point could not be inserted."

Those points are all located on the interface.

I am wondering if the interfacial points are really problematic, then how could I generate a mesh of outer domain which includes the points on the interface?

Could anybody help me for this circumstance?

If necessary, I can offer the pointwise file through an e-mail.

Thank you so much in advance.

Hello:

I'm a bit confused because you are using the words "domain" and "block" synonymously but in Pointwise a domain is a surface mesh and a block is a volume mesh. Therefore, I can't tell whether the error messages you describe (which I have never seen before myself) are from initializing a domain (surface mesh) or block (volume mesh).

If you are using a sliding interface between two blocks where the inner block is structured and the outer block is unstructured you have to remember to create two coincident domains (surface meshes) between them. Those two domains will have the same shape but one will be unstructured and the other structured.

Dear jchawner,

Sorry for confusing you with misused terms.

I have a problem while initializing block, not domain.

I have a question that, then is it impossible to generate unstructured block including both structured and unstructured domains?

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, a block can have faces consisting of structured and unstructured domains.

Here's a webinar that covers hybrid meshing techniques for meshing propeller-like geometries in Pointwise:
