Hi all,

I am currently trying to run a simple wave propagation case using a variable bathymetry defined by a STL. I have done this simulation with the exact same STL in OpenFOAM without issue but when I try to re-create the simulation in REEF3D I get some vertical slices that are being generated by the mesh. The attached image is viewing the first time step of the pvtu using a contour by phi with a value range of 0.

Are there any suggestions on how to go about fixing this issue or if this is just a visual bug?

I have attached the control, ctrl, and stl files (the stl would only upload with a .txt extension)

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi, sorry I'm still new to this software too, but I noticed this shows up when the still water level crosses objects. Not sure about the numerical meaning of this, but I've attached a sample to show.

Sadly I'm still running something on my workstation, so I can't test your files yet.

As you might have known, the model uses the level set method to represent the free surface. In addition, when you have structures in the domain, the lev set method is used to represent the boundary of such an object as well.

Therefore, you will see the "vertical slices" around these structures when you load the first (just initialised) time step from the simulation.

It is not a bug, it is simply a visual representation of the complete level set representation in the domain.

As Inocencio has pointed out, the visual representation "makes sense" once you include the stl of the actual object.

When you look at the simulation running, you will also see how the free surface behaves at the boundary with the structure.

Hope that helps.

Thanks kamath, great to know!

Hi all,

in general, the solid geometries are used as an overlay over the mesh loaded in preview. Without the "REEF3D_Solid.vtp", the free surface my look strange at times. But this only happens "inside" the structure and only due to geometric considerations. So no need to worry, it does not effect your numerical results. You can find the "REEF3D_Solid.vtp" file inside the "DIVEMesh_Paraview" folder (this is also where the grid preview is located).
