I recall it calculates it using a diffusion equation. So a simple linear equation, but one which CFX solves with an iterative solver.

The solver runs a simple linear solver to get the distance to the walls for the wall scale variable. This variable is requierd for the SST model. It is very rare for this equation to fail to converge...
