OK. A little googling showed me this page which proposes a solution to this problem:

LD_PRELOAD=/opt/Mesa/lib/libGL.so

I think this would require rebuilding paraview, but I could be utterly...

This looks like an Mesa/OpenGL problem. Are you using the binary provided on the OpenFOAM webpage or did you try building paraFoam yourself?

Why don't you simply run paraFoam from the command line?

paraFoam <root> cavity

Where <root> should be replaced with the path to the icoFoam directory (typically one level below the cavity...
