Hi evry1
I am using star CCM+11.6v...how to do cloud computing on a CFD problem. What r the features necessary(PC wise and also software wise)....And what is meant by cluster...sounds like getting additional CPU processor support among LAN connected PCs,how do we do that...how effective is cloud computing????? Have any 1 used it before or using now....give me some ideas in simple meaning.

sounds like you need to learn about the cloud and supercomputers and clusters in general first which is independent of star. then sign up to one of the cloud services like rescale, r-systems etc who have the code installed then use your power on demand license and it is really very easy and has nothing to do with your own computer

how to do cloud computing on a CFD problem.

Usually create an account for cloud supercomputer service. Or, if you have access to research computer facilities, get access to ssh terminal prompt to submit queue jobs.

What r the features necessary(PC wise and also software wise)

Well, I prefer to setup all my simulations on my own client. Then you have to have a machine that is capable of setting up and meshing your model. I recommend the best you can afford, you will save cost by saving time on meshing and pretest simulation. Software wise you should use the same StarCCM+ version as is installed on the cluster.

And what is meant by cluster

Literally means "a group of similar things", in this case server blades or rack computers. This is not something you need to worry about, company that manages the supercomputer cloud is the one that sets it up and maintains it.

how effective is cloud computing

How fast is a car? It's a tricky questions with a lot of "if", "or" and "given that". Let's just say that there are solutions for even most advanced problems. Beauty of cloud services is that it's can be scaled to solved almost any type of problem, given that you have the budget of course.

Just take into consideration - that you must have your own license, cloud computing companies (even if they mention Star-CCM+ in the list of software) usually do not provide license as an additional option.

One of the most common ISV cloud licensing models these days is BYOL (Bring Your Own License). For STAR for example you can buy so-called Power On demand (POD) tokens from CD-adapco (now Siemens) website. Other ISVs allow you to use your existing (annual?) license in the cloud (but during that usage you can't use it on your desktop). Other ISVs request that you pay for the usage of their software in the cloud. So yes, following gregjoseph's advice and carefully research about the software license first is highly recommended. If this is resolved then access and use of cloud computing today is straightforward. You can ask me more questions at wgentzsch@gmail.com.
