Greetings,

Me and a colleague are wondering whether it's possible to perform geometry feature optimization in STAR.

Now, we're not looking to simply perform a shape optimization as per the " Adjoint Flow: Wing Shape Optimization" tutorial, more like moving around a feature, like say a surface hole around an area in the CAD model to try and obtain an optimal placement for particular flow feature.

Best regards.

Yes, this is quite easy to do in STAR-CCM+.

Just parameterize your CAD model in 3D-CAD so you can change the hole location. Then you can use Optimate or Simcenter to run tons of cases to get you the tradeoffs.

Yes, but what happens if what you're working with is a received volume Mesh geometry in .stl or.x_t format and basically all you have are surfaces, lines and edges with no defined parametric features?

Is it possible to defined these features from an existing surface mesh, even if using external tools?

Best regards,

@Outbound: Did you find a solution for that?

That is not possible in Star, but you could use the feature recognition in other software and transfer CAD directly to Star with all the parametric dimensions; SolidWorks for example can do that - but it does not have a LiveLink to Star any more. NX or Inventor might help.
