I am interested in rotorcraft simulation within the SU2 framework. Generally, rotor simulations are done with solvers with a chimera/overset grid approach since each blade requires different and considerably high motion.

I found the Caradonna tutorial which does not include any blade motion control.
Also, there are some published works (not the code itself) from PoliMilano.
It seems they have implemented rotation + deformation of each blade. I am a bit worried about mesh quality when we consider the amount of deformation required.

I would like to get an opinion about what will be a good way to simulate rotorcraft in SU2, which options are available in the current situation, and what kind of development opportunities are possible?

Best,
Kursat

Hi Kursat,

I am no expert in rotorcraft/turbomachinery in CFD. But as a heads up, the main development of SU2 does not have any overset grid capability.

I would suggest trying to look for some papers on turbomachinery within SU2. Hope this provides a little bit of guidance. Good luck.

Hi Wallym,

Thank you very much, I look at the GitHub page and it seems currently no one is working on overset grid future.

Probably multizone grids with some sliding mesh + deformation can give what I would like to have. Turbomachinery papers are generally non-deformable bodies, with no pitch control, etc. My main problem is surface orientation + deformation of the body.
