A few questions about Gmsh: Background Mesh and Tutorial 7

Hello all!

I'm learning how to use Gmsh by going through the tutorials they've provided. However I've come to tutorial number 7 (t7) and am now stuck at the 'background mesh'. Here are a few questions, if one of you would be so kind as to help out:

First, what is a background mesh, anyway? There's no definitive answer to this that I've been able to find. It looks to be some pre-defined field that somehow gets interpolated into my mesh-space (??), but I have no real clear idea as to its concept and purpose.
Second, has anyone run this tutorial 7 provided by Gmsh? It's only 3 lines and the final line sets up a background mesh view. Am I supposed to continue on with that? Is that supposed to provide a mesh for me? The program hangs when I attempt to mesh 2d so I'm assuming something has not worked.

I'd appreciate any help offered to these questions! Thanks!

Sorry all, it was user failure. The smoothing steps option had accidentally been set to a very high value. Deleting it from my .gmsh-options solved that.
