Hi, I'm new here. I saw a few threads regarding this topic but nothing helpful.

I'm running OpenFOAM package on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I've copied the tutorials to another folder outside the OpenFOAM folder and am trying to run BlockMESH, icoFOAM, and paraVIEW from the terminal under my second username (not admin).

BlockMESH and icoFOAM seem to run fine under a non-admin account,
but paraVIEW is giving me the error: ParaVIEW: cannot connect to X server :0.0

ParaVIEW and the cavity tutorial seem to run fine when I am using the admin account, but blockMESH and icoFOAM do not.

From what I have read online, it seems I should be using a non-admin account to run the openFOAM package?

I'd like to get this running correctly, if anyone can help or direct me in the right direction I'd appreciate it very much!!! Thanks.

I am actually using the OPEN_FOAM directory that contains the tutorials I copied. Getting the same errors still.

I did allow full ownership of the tutorials directory which makes blockMesh and icoFoam run correct.

As I said before, paraFoam works when using my admin account, but under a different user it gives me the X server error.

Hi,

I'm still getting the same errors, and I am still using paraFoam as an admin, which I suspect is bad. Any advice or even links would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings samuel_cfd,

There is a lot of information missing from your description
Some of the information I recognize that is missing:
  1. Which installation instructions did you follow for installing OpenFOAM and ParaView?
  2. If anything, what did you do differently from the installation instructions?
  3. How exactly are you logging in into your machine?
    • Because from your description, it seems that your normal user does not have the ability to run graphical interfaces.
    • It almost seems like it's only your administrative account that is able to access the interactive desktop.
  4. How exactly are you running as "admin"?
Please keep in mind that anyone on this side of the digital world, is not able to see what you're seeing, unless you show us or explain things with enough detail .

Best regards,
Bruno
