Hello!

I have a problem which is probably very simple in nature to more experienced users of Star CCM+ regarding moving parts.

I am working on a project to simulate how an simple IC engine works and need to have a simple cylinder with an inlet and an outlet. For me I am struggling to get the piston and the valves to move in the simulation.

I have looked at the tutorials in the program and they are all based on rotational movement whereas my issue is more reciprocating motion of the two valves and the piston.

Can anyone direct me to some tutorials that may be of use or share any advice?

Thank you!

Piston and valve motion is best accomplished using the mesh morpher. Take a look at the tutorials on that.

Are you sure? I thought the mesh morpher was for when you have parts that are changing shape? I just need a simple reciprocating motion of two valves and a piston that all keep the same shape.

See, but you do have parts that are changing shape - the volume mesh will change shape with the motion of your piston/valve.

You can also use overset to resolve these sorts of motions, but IMO it is more expensive.

I feel like I really need a tutorial for this. Does anyone know if there is a tutorial that isn't in the program already?

Due to having a university licence and the way it was installed I don't have access to the models used in the tutorials.

I have a deadline in two weeks and I need to have a working simulation and really need to make this work.

Any help would be much appreciated !

There's a tutorial on morphing that comes with the code. The geometry is simple enough that even if you don't have the files you can figure it out, just read the user guide.
