Hello,

I want to post a new thread related to CD-adapco's products.

I've already posted new threads before, but I don't do this every day, every week, neither every month. It's the second time I'm struggling to find out how to just add a new thread asking for help.

It was hard even to discover this "Site Help, Feedback & Discussions". I needed to make a search with "how to new thread", which delivered me the following result: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/sit...w-threads.html

I love CFD-Online, but it's not user friendly at all for posting new threads. On the link above, Bernhard Gschaider states: "I don't use 'Friend'-feature on this forum out of principle". I was wondering to know what this principle is.

Here we're talking about interface design, human-computer interaction and user experience. For CFD-online to thrieve, I recommend the developers to harvest user's feedback on how they feel to offer a better and better experience. Sponsors will like this too.

Your question is a new thread so it seems as if you managed to find out how to post a new thread For others I can inform that to post a new thread you just need to go to the forum where you want to post a new thread and then click on the "New Thread" icon in the top left corner just above the thread list.

My interpretation on Bernhard's statement reminds me of an episode in South Park:

Stephen Abootman: I'm not your buddy, friend.
Phillip: He's not your friend, guy.
Stephen Abootman: I'm not your guy, buddy.
Terrance: He's not your buddy, friend.

I don't know when, but a trend occurred some considerable time ago, where people were trying to find friendlier ways to communicate and which were less formal. Calling someone you barely know "brother/sister", "friend", "buddy" or even "guy" became something of an usual way to address another person.
In this particular case, the word "friend" became more used in a broader sense, as in:

• if someone does not wish to harm me is a friend, otherwise is a foe;
• or simply someone I'm willing to speak to, than it's as good as a "friend".

But to many, the word "friend" has a much stricter sense and much stronger meaning, when compared to the friends one might have on Facebook or in the contact list here on the forum, or even is following on Twitter or any other social network.

Here on the forum the term "friend" is used in the contact mechanism, which mostly works as a personal+public contact list of people one frequently exchanges public/private messages with (at least in theory) here on the forum. Since the other person must agree to accept a "friend request" here on the forum, it brings up a further stricter connection. Thing is that probably after the first contact, the other person doesn't contact you any more.

In Bernhard's case he could have some several thousand "friends", many which would ask questions about PyFoam, swak4Foam and so on, all directly to him, instead of using the public OpenFOAM forums. This essentially would be a big bottleneck on his time and eventually PyFoam and swak4Foam could likely cease.

It would be helpful if you had stated in which forum you are looking for the button, because that way we could be certain if it's a forum where new threads can be opened or not.

On the other hand, if you want to look for the threads and posts, and if you are accessing the forum with a desktop/laptop computer, then when you are logged in, you can find them by:

1. Going to the "User Panel" menu entry on the top left of the page;
2. Then on the new page, there is a section entitled "New Subscribed Threads".
3. There you can see the threads you are subscribed to.

If by any chance you unsubscribed from your own thread, then:

1. In your User Panel page, you have a vertical section to your left, where the first entry is named "Your Profile".
2. The new page will have a few tabs and the second tab titled "Statistics";
3. On that tab, there is a section titled "Total Posts", where you can click on the link that states:
   

   Find all posts by your user name here
   Find all threads started by your user name here

4. Click on the one you are looking for and you should find your own thread.
